(Martin) William Mathison was born 4 April 1872 at Skanderborg, Denmark and was living in Warwick, Qld when he first enlisted. He would serve twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 35 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, second as a Private S.N. 191 in the 7th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse.
After returning from the war he returned to live in the Warwick district and married Mary Ann Willett on 8 Apr 1906.

After an illness of four months, the death' occurred' on Sunday of Mr. Martin William Mathison, a respected resident of the Warwick district. The late Mr. Mathison, who resided in Dragdon-street, was 65 years of age. Born in Skandaborg, Sweden, in 1872, he came to Australia in the ship, Duke of Buckingham, landing at' Moreton Bay in 1898, 'He settled' in the district, and farmed a property on Glen road for many years before coming to live in Warwick. Beside his widow, he is survived by two daughters (Miss Doris Mathison, Baking Board, near Chinchilla; and Mrs. A, V. Hughes, Brisbane), and by four sons (Messrs Sid., Peter and Thomas Mathison, Stanthorpe; and Mr. Harold Mathison, Warwick).
