Fourth (Imperial Bushmen) Contingent. Disembarked at Port Elizabeth (via Fremantle, Beira and Durban) on 19 June. Took part in the relief of the Eland's River garrison. Embarked in East London onto vessel ' Britannic' on 5 July 1901 and arrived at Port Adelaide 27/7/1901. Disbanded shortly afterwards. Re-enlisted with his brother William Peter McBean- joined Second Battalion Australian Commowealth Horse in Adelaide on 6/1/1902; Number 976. Embarked at Adelaide on board HM Transport "Manchester Merchant" on 20 February 1902 as corporal in 2nd Battalion, Commonwealth Horse for South Africa. Disembarked at Durban on 14 March. From Elandsfontein trained to Newcastle & then Durban when contingent. Not involved in fighting. Was discharged in South Africa
