Silvester John McDonald was born on 28 May 1881 in Queensland, a son to John Patrick McDonald and Rosina McDonald (nee Harris). When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. R. McDonald, South Brisbane, Qld.
