Also served in WW1, Private S.N. 4844, 9th Infantry Battalion, AIF.

It is noted at various stages his surname on records interchanged between McDonald and MacDonald.

When he enlisted for the South African (Boer) War in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 20 Jan 1900, he noted he was single and gave his address as, police station, Stanthorpe. He is recorded on the original nominal roll for the 2nd Queensland Contingent and Boer War Dossier, held by National Archives, and in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 2nd QMI, with the surname MacDonald.

He enlisted again in 1915 for WW1 with the surname McDonald and on his Attestation Paper, dated 9 Sep 1915, it is noted that; he was born at Surat and was 37 years 6 months of age; he was married with 2 children under 16 years of age and was working as a telegraph line keeper; his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. Sarah McDonald, Inglewood; and that he had previously served for 1 year 107 days in South Africa.

William Alexander McDonald was born on 16 Feb 1878 at Surat, Queensland, a son to Alexander McDonald and Nora Mary McDonald (nee O'Keeffe). He married Sarah Margaret Clifford (nee Tevlin) in Queensland and they had 2 children.
