William McGladdery was born on 20 June 1871 at Gracemere, Rockhampton district, Queensland, a son to William McGladdery and Annie McGladdery (nee Donnelly). He married Kate Jones on 12 Apr 1905 in Queensland and they had two children.
He was a long time resident of Mount Morgan where in his early years he conducted his trade of saddler before a change of career led to working at the crushing plant of the Mt Morgan Gold mining company. He was also an accomplished sportsman in the area. Around 1935 he relocated to Bundaberg.
