Following completion of his service with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen following disbandment 10 Aug 1901 it appears John Joseph O'Neill again served in the South African (Boer) War. On 7 Feb 1902 it appears he joined a force established by Major F Von Steinaecker known as Steinaecker's Horse enlisting in it's Special Squadron serving until his discharge on its disbanding on 15 Jul 1902.
