Johann (John) Friedrich (Frederick) Otto Perske was born on 18 Mar 1875 in Queensland, a son to Gottholif Julius Perske and Albertine Perske (nee Discher). He married Eliza Jane Strain on 12 Feb 1908 in Brisbane, Queensland and they had 3 children.
He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private (rising to Sergeant) S.N. 200 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Company Sergeant-Major (rising to Regimental Sergeant-Major) S.N. 818 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
