Charles Frederick Alolph Petersen (Peterson) was born on 14 Aug 1854 at Parramatta, New South Wales, a son to Christian Adolph Petersen and Elizabeth Petersen (nee Kirk). He married Charlotte Martha Rayner on 20 Jul 1878 in Queensland and they settled at Helidon near Toowoomba where that raised 9 children.
Their first born child, a son, also named Charles Frederick Petersen was born in 1879 and predeceased his parents in 1907. His obituary in 1907 in the Darling Downs Gazette noted his involvement in military matters and noted this also applied to his father who had 'served his country in the last South African War'.
