Charles Francis Phillips served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 209 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and second as a Private S.N. 830 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 471 & 524).
His funeral notice in the Courier Mail, Brisbane, 16 Jul 1954, also notes he served in the 25th Battalion AIF in WW1. He appears he enlisted in Brisbane under the name of Charles Phillips S.N. 2193 serving as a Private. It also appears that he lowered his age at enlistment as Brisbane City Council Toowong Cemetery records indicates he was 79 years of age when he died in 1954 (source Funeral Notice; National Archives Australia WW1 service record; ADFA - AIF Project; and OZ-Boer Database Project).
