William Henry Pickburh was born about 1874 in Staffordshire, England, a son to George Henry Pickburn and Isabel Pickburn. He was living in Brisbane when he was drawn from the Special Services Officers to serve with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen in the South African (Boer) War.

It is unclear if he was discharged in South Africa or returned to South Africa following discharge where he married Clare Prewett. They were residing at Witbank, Transvaal, South Africa when he enlisted with South African Military Forces for WW1. He served as a Major with the South African Heavy Artillery and was seriously wounded in action at Somme, Flanders. He was evacuated to the Duchess of Westminster's Hospital, Le Tourquett, France where he died following a leg amputation.
