Served 22 years in the British Indian Army and retired a Lieutenant Colonel in 1883. Appointed Colonel of the Victorian Mounted Rifles in 1885 and made them wear khaki uniforms as well as the slouch hat, later a defining piece of kit in the Australian Military/Defence Force. He briefly commanded the Victorian Rangers [1888-89] and commanded the Second Victorian Contingent to South Africa where he was mentioned in despatches. He lost a son to the First World War; another son became a Brigadier.
