Herbert Tangney Rapkins was born on 12 Nov 1881 at Moama, New South Wales, a son to William Rapkins and Sarah Rapkins (nee Walker). When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. S. Rapkins at Nerang, Qld. He married Mabel Rathbone on 18 Oct 1911 in Queensland and they had 2 children.
He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 143 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was was as a Private (rising to Lance Corporal) S.N. 7445 in the 41st Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1. When he enlisted for WW1 he was living with his family at Tweed Heads, NSW.
