Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

His older brother, Private Thomas Redhead S.N. 378, also served with him in the 6th QIB, Boer war.

When Reuben Redhead enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as J. Redhead, Indooroopilly. In the original nominal roll for the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, it is noted his N.O.K. was his father. At the time of his enlistment he was living and working as a miner at Charters Towers.

Reuben Redhead was born on 12 Nov 1880 at Brisbane, a son to John Redhead and Mary Ann Redhead (nee Dallihoy). He married Margaret Jane Richardson on 25 Oct 1901 at the No. 2 Methodist Church, Charters Towers, and they had 5 children.

When he was discharged from Boer war service in Jun 1902 he returned to Charters Towers and re-engaged in mining and went on to earn his Engine Drivers ticket. Around 1920 he relocated his family to Strathdickie near Proserpine where he then engaged in sugar cane farming until he passed in 1923.
