Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Served in the South African (Boer) war and also served in WW1, Private S.N. 2719, 49th Infantry Battalion, AIF.

His younger brother, Corporal Reuben Redhead S.N. 379, also served with him in the 6th QIB, Boer war.

When Thomas Redhead enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as J. Redhead, Indooroopilly. In the original nominal roll for the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, it is noted his N.O.K. was his father. At the time of his enlistment he was living in Charters Towers and is included in the list of names of volunteers from the district on the Boer War/Lissner Park Memorial Kiosk in Charters Towers.

He enlisted again in 1916 for WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 3 Apr 1916, it is noted that; he was born at Indooroopilly and was 44 years of age; he was single and a saddler (in Charters Towers); his N.O.K. was his father John Redhead, Indooroopilly; and he had previously served in the 6th QIB in South Africa. He was taken P.O.W. at Reugny, France, 25 Mar 1917 and finally repatriated to England in Dec 1918.

Thomas Redhead was born on 24 May 1871 at Indooroopilly, Queensland, a son to John Redhead and Mary Ann Redhead (nee Dallihoy).

He returned to Australia from WW1 and to Charters Towers, before relocating to Sarina in 1919 where he opened a saddlery business.
