Frederick James Rowe served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 20 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and second as a Private S.N. 842 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 480 & 525; National Archives Australia- Boer War Dossier).
