Albert Edward Runcorn served in both The South African (Boer) War and WW1 (Gallipoli). He first served as a Private S.N. 257 in the 3rd Queensland Mointed Infantry, Boer War. After returning to Australia he married Annie Victoria Roche in 1907.

With the outbreak of WW1 he again enlisted on 18 August 1914 as a Bombadier (rising in rank to Corporal, Sergeant, Battery Sergeant Major) in the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade (7th Battery) serving at Gallipoli.
