On enlisting James was 21years 6 months old, single, 6' tall, grey eyes, red hair,
ruddy complexion, Roman Catholic, living with his mother.

21/4/1902   enlisted into Boer War
                  "C" Squadron, No.1 Troop (Bendigo)
                  Private in 6th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse
