Sergeant Harold T Smith, a member of the sixth South Australian Contingent, who was serverly injured during the engagement with General De Wet at Reitz on June 6, was a member of the "A" Battery Field Artillery previous to the Boer War, and volunteered with the first contingent, but was not accepted. He then determined to proceed to South Africa on his own account, and immediately aupon arriving at Cape Town joined the South African Light Horse, under Lord Dundonald's command, which regiment was ordered to Natal to act as scouts to General Buller's column. Sergent Smith was in the battle of Colenso, and in the detachment which was first to enter Ladysmith after that memorable siege. After ten months' hard fighting, he returned to South Australia without having been injured. Sergeant Smith has a brother who has been with General French nearly the whole time, and still in South Africa. Sergeant W.A. Smith, of the North Stafford Mounted Infantry.
