John Smith served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private (rising in rank to Corporal) S.N. 285 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, second as a Private S.N. 647 in the 6th Queensland Imerial Bushmen. Following his second service newspaper reports note he remained in South Africa for further service when the rest of the 6th QIB returned to Australia, his return and date of discharge is not given in records.
