Much regret will be felt by his many friends at the death of Mr. William John Whitley Strong, solicitor, of Flinders lane and of Sunnybrook Eltham. He died after a short illness following an operation in a private hospital. Mr Strong was closely associated with military affairs in the early days of the Victorian Mounted Rifles. He was a member of the contingent chosen to represent Victoria at Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee celebrations in London. He saw service during the South African war, first as a member of the Bushmen's Corps and later as adjutant of the 4th Contingent. Mr Strong was a son of the late Alderman Strong and of Mrs William Strong of Carlisle street, St Kilda. He leaves a widow the daughter of Mrs W. H Nicholson. The funeral which will be private will take place on Wednesday morning.
The funeral of the late Captain W. J. W. Strong, of Eltham, took place on Wednesday, the remains being interred in the Melbourne Cemetery. The Rev. T. R. Mappin, of Eltham, assisted by Rev. L. G. Vance. conducted the service, and Messrs. Apps and Sons the funeral arrangements. Many personal and military friends and representatives of the legal profession were in attendance. The late Mr. Strong was legal adviser to the Protestant Refuge Carlton.
