John Thorpe was originally from Victoria and was living and working in Charters Towers as a miner when he first enlisted in the South African (Boer) War.

He would serve twice in the Boer War, first as a Private S.N. 243 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and second as a Private S.N. 927 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse. (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 472 & 525; and National Archives Australia- Boer war Dossier for 2nd service).
