BOER WAR VETERAN DIES
MR. JOHN TREMAINE WHITE
Mr John Tremaine White, aged 81 years, died last Friday at Mathoura at the home of his daughter. He had been ill for several months. Born at Penola, South Australia, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas White, and he lived in South Australia until he was five years of age. His family moved to Casterton, Vic., and remained there until 1894 when he came to Jerilderie where he was employed as a farmer. In 1898 he joined the T.B.C. Regiment and fought against the the Boers with the South African contingent. He saw action in the Transvaal, Orange Free State. Rhodesia and Cape Colony. In 1901 he returned to Jerilderie ?and. here married Miss Elizabeth McLachlan. He purchased land at North Coree, his property being namjad 'Merino' and he resided there as a farmer until his retirement about four years ago when he same to live in Jerilderie.
For many years he was a councillor on Jerilderie Shire Council and also a member of The Farmers and Steelers' Association, and the Rifle Club. He was a staunch supporter of the R.S.S. & A.I.L.A.. In Novmber, 1950, he went with his wife to reside at Mathoura with his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Snell. About six months prior to his death his health deteriorated and he was a patient at Deniliquin Hospital several times before he died at Mathoura.
He is survived by his wife, sons William, Robert (Jerilderie), Albert (Sydney), and. daughters Dulcie (Mrs. D. Reaper. Marthoura) and Elizabeth (Mrs. S. C. Snell, Mathoura). Two sons, Edward and Jack and one daughter, Mary predeceas ed him. The funeral took place on Saturday last, from the Church of England Church for Mathoura cemetry, Rev. R. B. Ball officiating at the church and graveside. Members of the Mathoura Sub Branch of the R.S-S. & A.I.L.A. formed a guard of honour and Poppies were placed on the grave and the R.S.S. & A.I.L.A. service read.
Coffin bearers were Messrs. K. Diouglas, E. J. Bock, E. Faravoni, J. Collins (Sec. Jerilderie Sub Branch) C. Keech and A. Henderson. Mr C. E. Perrin had charge of the funeral arrangements.
