He gaing his education in England attending Eton before returning to work on family pastoral holdings. He enlisted and served in the South African (Boer) War in 1900 as a Private (rising in rank to Sergeant) S.N. 9 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
He returned to work on the family pastoral holdings and the entered politics in 1901 serving as a MLA in the Qld Parliament for the seat of Fassifern until 1913. At the outbreak of WW1 he made his way to Africa where he joined the East Africa Mounted Rifles. Serving with the Intelligence Branch he was wounded and captured in 1916, escaping 6 months later, for which he was awarded the Military Cross. In 1918 he served on a six month long reconnaissance mission, engaging with the enemy, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, a bar to his Military Cross and promotion to Captain.
On his return to Australia in 1918 he married Enid Frances Sydney Jones and they would take up residence on his property "Washpool Farm", near Kalbar, Queensland. That same year he was elected to House of Representatives, Commonwealth Government, for the seat of Moreton which he last held in 1932.
