He was hospitalised at 1st Australian Stationary Hospital at Ismailia, for treatment of a Hernia, on the 26th March, 1916, and transferred to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital in Heliopolis, on the 28th March, 1916. He was transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Mudros, on the 20th April, 1916.

Felix embarked for Australia aboard the H.T. “Itonus”, at Suez, on the 10th June, 1916. His wife was notified he was to arrive in Melbourne about the middle of July. He arrived in Australia on the 18th July, 1916. Felix was admitted to the 7th Australian General Hospital at Keswick, for an operation on his hernia; he was discharged from hospital on the 13th November, 1916.

Felix was discharged from the A.I.F. on the 22nd January, 1917, in Adelaide; he had served a total of 1 year & 308 days, with 1 year and 47 days being on active service. He was of good character.

Felix applied for a pension for on the 7th March, 1917, for himself, his wife, and five children, but all were denied, as it was the opinion of the medical board that Felix was not fully incapacitated.

In an extract from his medical report, it states “While carrying heavy metal pipes on about the 25th October, 1915, at night at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, he placed his foot in a hole in the ground, immediately felt pain in left groin, consulted Staff Surgeon Morris, who informed me that I was ruptured…….
The General Recommendation: - There is a left inguinal hernia present…
Board recommends: - Operation for Hernia and reconsideration in 2 months……..
General Recommendation: - Operation good result, but he is overage, permanently unfit…….

Felix was in hospital in Adelaide and was gravely ill; he was trying to get his affairs in order, and had requested that he be buried in the Soldiers Cemetery in West Terrace, Adelaide. He required a copy of his discharge papers to prove that he had served in the A.I.F. Felix had enclosed a Statutory Declaration that was witnessed by a layman, and not a Justice of the Peace, for a replacement of his discharge papers. The Authorities sent back a fresh form and requested that it be witnessed by a J.P. By this time Felix was unable to sign anything, and was not expected to live for much longer.

On the 13th April, 1938, the family had a solicitor write to the Army Records to obtain a copy of his discharge papers. The Army sent back a Statutory Declaration form for Felix to sign, but he was declared non-compos metis and unable to sign the form; the solicitor was asking for a way that the discharge certificate could be issued without Felix signing the Stat Dec. form, as he was not expected to live for very long. The family applied for Felix’s ANZAC Commemorative Medallion, and Lapel badge, on the 9th October, 1967.
