Mary O'Shanahan trained at the North Adelaide Private Hospital (later Calvary Hospital) before volunteering to be one of the six nurses sent to the Second Anglo-Boer War as part of the South Australian contingent of nurses. She was a regular correspondant back to South Australia, with a number of her letters being published in local newspapers giving people an idea of the experiences of the South Australian nurses in South Africa.
