HERBERT HENRY LAURENCE MORGAN
Herbert was the son of Emily MOORE & George Henry MORGAN and was born on the 17th of May 1893 in Willaston, SA.
Herbert was the second child born into the family of six children. His eldest brother died just 6 months before Herbert was born.
His parents were married on the 21st of September 1891 in the Registry Office, Gawler.
His father was the son of George MORGAN & Esther CORNISH and was born on the 8th of August 1870 in Gawler.
His mother was the daughter of James Alexander MOORE & Maria Ann LAWRANCE and was born on the 7th of September 1873 in Mananarie SA.
Herbert grew up in Sandy Creek and his father was an engine driver. He was 2 years old when his little sister was born.
He would have been excited when his little brother was born on the 7th of January 1897, but sadly William died at 5 months of age.
Herbert was 6 when his next brother was born on the 16th of August 1899 in Sandy Creek, but tragically he died 4 months later.
At 8 years of age, Herbert finally got a little brother to play with.
Herbert was a labourer.
Herbert enlisted into the 3rd Field Company Engineers, 14th Reinforcement on the 6th of September 1915 in Adelaide and was allotted the service number 5716.
On the 22nd of November 1915 a large crowd farewelled Herbert and others in the Sandy Creek Sunday School. They presented Herbert with a periscope.
Herbert embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A54 Runic on the 20th of January 1916, disembarking in Alexandria on the 27th of February 1916.
In April and May he was sick in hospital suffering from Bronchitis. He rejoined his unit on the 17th of May 1916 and embarked for Marseilles, France.
On the 15th of November, whilst they were at Longueval, France Herbert suffered a mortar shell wound to his right shoulder and leg.
He was transferred back to the 4th Southern General Hospital, Plymouth, England.
He remained here until the 16th of January 1917 when he was transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital in Harefield.
On the 27th of April 1917 Herbert was transferred to the 16th Field Company at No. 3 Camp, Park House, Salisbury Plain.
Herbert returned to Adelaide on board the H.S “Suevic”
Herbert was discharged on the 4th of January 1918, medically unfit, due to Valvuler Heart Disease.
He married Sarah Ann PITMAN 30th April 1925 residence of her uncle, Ernest Benjamin PITMAN, “Rossalyn” Murray Town SA. (near Booleroo)
Sarah was the daughter of Jessie Ann PITMAN and was born on the 2nd of May 1901 in Gladstone, SA.
They honeymooned at Victor Harbor, before settling at “Box Hill” Murraytown.
They welcomed their first child into the family; Irene.
Their second child was born on the 10th of November 1928; George Raymond Lawrence.
On the 23rd of January 1929 they held an auction on their farm as they were moving to Brookton, WA.
Herbert died on the 13th of October 1930 in the Perth Hospital, WA, aged 37.
Herbert was buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; was Anglican NA (now ANNA) Plot 0276.
