Private Edwin Alexander Cameron's Story
Edwin Alexander Cameron was born in Penola, South Australia on the 29th of September, 1886. Edwin attended Penola State School and after he completed school he became a farmer joining his father. Edwin is the son of Alexander CAMERON and Margaret (nee MCKENZIE.)
Edwin enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 13th of October 1916 Adelaide, South Australia. He joined the 48th Battalion in the 9th Reinforcement. Edwin was 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches, 164 lbs, grey eyes with dark brown hair. Previous to Edwin enlisting in the AIF he served in the South Australian Infantry Regiment as a volunteer.
On the 10th of February 1917 the unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT Seang Bee, Edwin was ranked as a private. The 48th Battalion was raised in 1916 to take part in World War I they fought in the trenches of the Western Front in Belgium and France.
Edwin was involved in the unsuccessful attempt to seize the Passchendaele Ridge from the defending Germans on the 12th of October 1917. The fight was vicious and it took place in one of the most appalling waterlogged conditions, which helped render the name Passchendaele a synonym for slaughter. Edwin Alexander Cameron died that day in the line of duty fighting for our country at the age of 31, we should be very proud to know that Edwin made a great contribution to the freedom we have today. He died in great honour and will always be remembered.
