ALFRED HUGHES LEFT FOR FRANCE ON THE 7/10/14 HE WAS IN THE FIRST BATTALION CHESHIRE REGIMENT LATER HE WAS POSTED TO THE 1OTH BATTALION WHICH LANDED IN FRANCE ON THE 26/9/15 PROBABLY TO STIFFEN THEM UP WITH SOME REGULARS. HE WAS ONE OF 14 MEN LISTED AS MISSING BELIEVED KILLED WHEN AT 7.30 PM ON THE 24TH APRIL 1916 THE GERMANS EXPLODED A MINE ON THE 10TH CHESHIRE'S TRENCH. HE HAS NO KNOWN GRAVE AND IS LISTED ON THE LOOS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING PANEL 49 AND 50. HE IS AN AUSTRALIAN BORN AND BRED OLD CONTEMPTIBLE AND AS SUCH IS QUITE A RARITY AS THEY WERE NEARLY ALL BRITISH REGULARS.

Alfred enlisted in the British Army in 1913 and embarked to France in 1914 with the BEF. He was wounded in action at La Bassee, France in November 1914 and invalided to England. He returned to France in September 1915 and made the supreme sacrifice on 24 April 1916.

Mr. and Mrs. D. Hughes, of Solomontown, have received news of the death in France, on April 24, of their third son, Private Alfred Hughes. He was only 18 years and 9 months old and was in the 10th Cheshires. He was killed in action.
Previously he was reported missing. In October, 1913, he joined the Cheshires and at the outbreak of war left for the front with his regiment. In November, 1914, he was wounded, but after spending several months at home he returned to the front
in September, 1915.
