Lawrence was born in Melbourne on the 15th July 1938, and lived in Garden City, Melbourne for many years. He attended Graham Street Primary School , Port Melbourne and later to South Melbourne Technincal School. On gaining his certificate, he joined a RAAF Trainee scheme - Junior Equipment Trainee Scheme in 1956 at the age of 15 years. He was sent to RAAF Wagga Wagga for training and was later transfered to the permanent RAAF Forces. In 1962 he was sent to RAAF Base Ubon, Thailand on under SEATO agreement. Lawrence was a Sergeant at this time having moved quickly through the ranks. In 1965 Lawrence was sent to RAAF Base Butterworth Malaysia during the Indonesian Confrontation Campaign and in 1967 he was sent to RAAF Base UBON, Thailand in support of the Vietnam Conflict. On serving a period in Thailand he was sent back to Butterworth Malaysia and eventual returned to Australia. Lawrence resigned from the RAAF with the rank of Flight Sergeant and returned to civilian life.
