John Henry Rippon Butler
Who died from wounds received in action on 16th September 1916 in the Great Offensive on the Somme was the elder son of the late Mr. Henry Butler and Lily Maud nee Wilson. He was born in 10 December 1896 in Armadale,Victoria, and entered the Melbourne Grammar Preparatory School in 1909 and came up to the Melbourne Grammar Senior School in 1911. He was a probationer and a House Prefect, and left at the end of 1915 and went to England, where he obtained a commission in the Royal West Kent Regiment almost immediately on landing in England, but later on transferred to the Coldstream Guards, Special Reserve, attached to 2nd Battalion, with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was only at the front seven weeks, but in that short time had gained the confidence of his men. He was badly wounded in both arms by shell fire on the morning of the 15th September 1916 when leading his platoon in charge against the enemy. He was taken to the No 34 CCS but died there next day.
