Biography contributed by Michael Silver

Joining the Wallaby March at Gunnedah, New South Wales in December 1915, 17 years old Lance Tudgey was one of the lucky ones to survive the horrors of the Great War and return to Australia - but only just.

After five months of training he sailed out of Sydney on May 2, 1916, bound for the battlefields of France at a critical phase of the war.

A lewis gunner, Private Tudgey was wounded in the hand at Passchendaele on October 12, 1917. He was, however, only out of the line a short time.

On September 30, 1918, seven weeks before the German surrender, Private Tudgey was badly injured when a shell exploded close to him. This was the end of the conflict for Lance Tudgey as he spent the next 17 months in hospital recovering. He returned to Australia in the hospital ship 'Dunluce Castle' in May 1919.

Lance Tudgey return to farming near Gunnedah and named his property "Hill 60" after the Belgium battlefield location.

Private Lancelot Charles Tudgey was the last of the Gunnedah 'Wallabies' when he died in Gunnedah Hospital in March 1987, aged 89.
