John Michael was the fourth child of Ruth and John Hayes. He married Edna in 1938 and had a daughter Patricia in 1939 before enlisting in 1942. He spent time in New Guinea and Papua as a Military Policeman and sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was discharged in 1945 and welcomed a son Michael in 1946. He was a tram driver before enlisting and returned to this job, where he stayed for until his retirement. He lived with Edna in Coburg until they moved to Rye, Victoria. Edna passed away in 1986, and Mick stayed in Rye before moving to Vasey RSLCare Nursing Home in Bundoora in 2008. He passed away on 8 February 2016, 3 months shy of his 100th Birthday.
