Vernon was the second of three children of Henry Alexander Baynes (born 1887 in Essex, England) and Virginia (Jinnie) Jones (born 1884 in Melbourne, Victoria). Henry - a Clerk in England - married Jinnie in 1915 in Melbourne, Victoria. In 1916 Henry and Jinnie had settled in Sydney, NSW where Henry worked as an Insurance Inspector and Commercial Traveller.
Vernon enlisted in the Australian Army in April 1940, and was a Lieutenant (Service No:NX70454) with2/30 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in November 1945. Brother Ken (Sapper; N311493), Cousins Vernon Roger (Bombardier; Service No:272934), Robert (Able Seaman; Service No:24974) and Uncle Vernon (Gunner; Service No:N230145) also served in WWII.
In 1941 Vernon married Ruth Mary Wilson (born 1913 in Sydney, NSW) - Ruth was a WRAN (LeadingTelegraphist; Service No:WR/53) and they had separated by 1949.
Vernon worked as a Sales Manager and Company Director and lived in Sydney, NSW with second wife Brenda Elizabeth. He died in 1988.
