His eldest son 3145 Private William Henry Raines 46th Battalion AIF died of wounds 20 April 1917 age 21. St Sever Cemetery Extension Rouen O. IX. G. 3
Henry Hammond Raines enlisted in August 1916, giving his age as 44 years and 1 month. He was from Fitzroy, Victoria, and was only in the AIF for one week when he became ill and was admitted to the 5th Australian General Hospital in Melbourne. He died a week later, 8 September, 1916 after becoming progressively worse and slipped into a coma. Cause of death was given as pleurisy and nephritis.
