NURSE (86) WILL ATTEND BOER VETERANS' DINNER
An 86-year-old Boer War nurse will attend a Boer War veterans' dinner at Anzac House next week. She is Miss Elizabeth Bauer, the only Boer War
nurse in this State. She is now living at the Home of Peace, Subiaco. London born, Miss Bauer nursed in England before developing lung trouble. She then went to South Africa, where she served at a base hospital. When the Boer War started she was sent to Johannesburg to care for wounded soldiers.
Hessian Tents
Conditions were appalling. All nursing was done in hessian tents and dust storms covered everything and everyone with a layer of fine dust.
After the war she came to Perth, has lived here since. She did private nursing until she retired.
Miss Bauer has no relatives in this State. 'I have been alone since I was seven, when my mother died,' she said today.
