As an Imperial Reservist he joined for service 10th August 1914, sailed for England 1st November 1914. He joined the Royal Artillery and sailed for Gallipoli in June 1915, with the 91st Heavy Battery. After the evacuation he proceeded to the Suez Canal zone, marched through the desert with the 60-pounder guns for the attack on Gaza, and served throughout the Palestine campaign until the Armistice was signed. He left Egypt for Australia in September 1919.
