Died on this date - 1st August ......Lieutenant Samuel Charles Lindsey Hodgkinson was born in 1886 at Baslow, Derbyshire, England.

Samuel was appointed to British Royal Navy on 26th August, 1905 having previously served with the Merchant Navy.

He was appointed Acting Sub-Lieutenant in January, 1909 then Sub-Lieutenant in August, 1910.

Sub-Lieutenant Hodgkinson was appointed Lieutenant with the Royal Australian Navy on 31st May, 1912.


Lieutenant Hodgkinson was injured & hospitalised for an operation in January, 1915 while involved in gunnery practice on H.M.A.S. Australia. He returned to duty with H.M.A.S. Australia but was later taken ill & was admitted to Royal Naval Hospital, South Queensferry, Scotland & a second operation was performed.


Lieutenant Samuel Charles Lindsey Hodgkinson died on 1st August, 1915 & was buried in Hassop Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hassop, Derbyshire, England with a Private Headstone.
