Amongst, the Gawler born boys at the front are the three sons of Col F Makin V.D.— Mjr. F. H. Mak in, Capt. E. L. Makin and Lieut. J. H. W. Makin. Capt. E. L. Makin was at the great battle of Neuve Chapelle and in a recent issue of the 'Wiltshire Gazette' there appears an article by a sergeant in the 2nd. Wilts Regiment, to which Capt. Makin is attached, in which he gives an account of the battle. He concludes thus :— Our C. O.. Capt. Makin deserves the V.C. for good work done personally. He led the boys all the way knowing no fear, and, from what, I can hear, he has accounted for a few Germans off his own bat. He set a splendid example to his men and I believe the whole regiment would follow him to death. I feel quite proud of him, especially as he was my company officer, both in India and Africa. Good luck to him. I hope his good work will be fully acknowledged by the proper author ities."Capt. Makin and his brothers were born at 'Hylands' Cowan- street, Gawler. His mother is a daughter of the late Hon Walter Duffield M.L.C. Col. Makin when he resided in Gawler over a quarter of a centry ago commanded the local volunteer.
