Samuel was the eldest of 8 children of Robert Morrison Phister and Janet King. His 6 brothers also served in the Australian Defence Forces in WWI and WWII.

Samuel, a Carpenter, married Erin Mabel Leonard in Millmerran, QLD and enlisted in the RAAF in 1942. He continued to live and work in Meillmerran, QLD as a Carpenter until his death in 1978
