Hmas Whyalla experiences in war and peace

George joined the newly commissioned corvette HMAS Whyalla J153 on 11 March 1942 and was on board for only a month initially departing on 20 April. However a second stint was much longer extending from 17 December 1942 until 15 September 1943.

The Whyalla took part in operations around New Guinea operating as a survey ship. George had clear memories of the attack by Japanese dive bombers and fighters in January of 1943 at Cape Nelson as this was the first time that he and the ship had really been attacked in force. Fortunately the ship was not damaged in the attack. The survey work continued along the coast until the Whyalla again was under fire at Milne Bay in April of 1943. This attack was by a larger force of Japanese aircraft but once again there was no serious damage. The ship returned to Australian waters and Dad departed the ship at HMAS Moreton (Depot).

George was part of the celebration on 29 October 1988 when the Whyalla, long since retired from service was relocated at the Whyalla Maritime Museum and the ship is now the centrepiece of that museum. Some photos of this event with former shipmates and their wives are part of this record.
