Bombardier Neville Francis Amadio was born with the surname of "Taylor". He served in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force during the Second World War in 62nd Searchlight Battery; enlisted 3rd July 1942, discharged 7th November 1944. He was released from the Army prior to the end of the war on his CO's recommendation, being ordered to pursue his musical career.
