Alfred was the third of six children of Alfred Bennett (born 1864 in Gundagai, NSW) and Selina Butler (born 1871 in Brisbane, QLD). Alfred Snr and Selina married in 1892 in Brisbane, QLD and the family lived in Charter's Towers, Gympie and Brisbane in QLD where Alfred Snr was a Life Assueance Inspector.
Eldest brother was William Ruberry Bennet, renowned Landscape Artist, and younger brother Eric Thomas Randle Bennet served with the Australian Army (Service No: NX1110) in WWII.
Alfred initially enlisted in the Royal Navy on 1 July 1913, serving on HMAS Tingira as a Boy 1st Class (Service No: 3179). He was an Ordinary Seaman in December 1914 and continued to serve on Cerberus, Psych (in 1915 when he was promoted to Able Seaman), Penguin and Melbourne.
Alfred married Phyllis Laurietta Yendle (born 1895 in Carlton, Victoria) in 1919 in Carlton Victoria. He was Discharged in December 1922and he and Phyllis lived in St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria where Alfred worked as a Linesman. They moved to Brisbane briefly in 1928 where Alfred was a Labourer, and to Lane Cove in Sydney, NSW where Alfred initially worked as a Labourer in 1931
Alfred served with the Australian Army ACMF Volunteer Defence Corps as a Private (Service nO; N138772) in WWII. He and Phyllis remained in North Sydney and Alfred worked as a Linesman until his death in 1977. Phyllis died in 1987 in Berowra, NSW
