Ronald was the third of five children of William Raymond Bilson (born 1890 in Sheffield, Tasmania) and Lillian May Crole (born 1894 in Warragul, Victoria). William had farmed in Gippsland, Victoria before serving in WWI as a Private (Service No: 5973), and was awarded the Military Medal in 1918.
