John James HOLDEN was the grandson of Henry James HOLDEN and son of Sir Edward W. HOLDEN both of Holden's Motor Body Builder's Ltd. which was to later become General Motors-Holden's Ltd.
In 1950, he joined General Motors-Holden's Ltd. as a Project Engineer. By 1955 he had become Works Manager and helped construct a new press shop at the GMH plant in Woodville and supervised the construction of a new GMH assembly plant at Elizabeth - both in South Australia.
Promoted to Plant and Equipment Engineer in Adelaide he was soon transferred to the GMH plant at Fishermans Bend in Victoria where he became Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer. By 1969 he was promoted to Manager of Assembly Plants and in 1970 he was promoted to Manager, South Australian Operations. In 1971 he became a Director of General Motors-Holden's Ltd. in Adelaide.
