Born in 1897 in Dinmore, QLD, David (Mick) was the third of six children of John Thomas Campbell (born 1867 in Brisbane, QLD) and Margaret May Ryan (born 1868 in Tipperary, Ireland). John and Margaret married in Ipswich, QLD in 1890 and raised their family in the region.
Mick worked as a Clerk with the QLD Farmer's Co Operative Association and in 1920 in Ipswich, married Lucy Kitching (born 1900 in Burrum Village in QLD). Mick was a keen sportsman, and in 1938 he was Manager of the Australian Soccer Team when it played against the touring India side in Brisbane.
Mick and Lucy settled in Ipswich, QLD and raised their family - Mick maintained his employment as a Clerk with the Farmer's CoOp, and in May 1942 enlisted in the RAAF as a Leading Aircraftman (Service No: 75561).
