John was the second of three children of Sydney Roland Crole (born 1892 in Roorooma, Victoria) and Isobel Christina Fuller (born 1893 in Port Campbell, Victoria). Sydney, a Police Constable, and Isobel married in Mirboo, Victoria shortly after Sydney's return from WWI.

John's father Sydney (Service No: 10332)served in WWI with Field Artillery Brigade and was WiA in France. Uncle Floyd was a Corporal (Service No: VX40718) with 102 Convalescent Depot in WWII, and cousins - Reginald Vaughan a Sapper (Service No: VX62632); and Mervyn Henry an Able Seaman (Service No: PM/V498 with the RAN Volunteer Reserves - served in WWII.

Following his Discharge in April 1946, John returned to Moonee Ponds, where he worked as a Fitter and Turner. In 1949 he married Edna Jean Grubb (born 1922 in Brisbane, QLD). Edna worked as a Cashier before her marriage. John died in 1976 and Edna in 2006.
