William was the eldest of four children of William George Joy (born 1882 in Hawthorne, Victoria) and Florence Emily Churchus (born 1885 in St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria). William Snr, a Felt Hatmaker, and Florence married in 1911 and settled in Hawthorne, Victoria where they raised their family.
William, a Salesman, enlisted in the Army in March 1941, and was a Private (Service No:VX127032) with MTTD when he was Discharged in February 1945. Youger twin brothers, Frank Edward (Service No: VX138940) and Albert Fred (Service No:VX139085) also served in WWII.
In 1945 William was working as a Knife Hand in melbourne when he married Ella Maria Goold (born 1911 in Ulverstone, Tasmania). Ella was a Machinist, and she and William lived in Hawthorn until the early 1960s when they moved to Kew, where William worked as a Garage Hand until 1980. Ella died in 1984 and William in 2001.
