John was the eldest of two children of William Wyper Hendry (born 1881 at Clackmannanshire in Scotland) and Emily Moreton (born 1882 in Lancashire, England). William was an apprentice in Lancashire when he met Emily, a Milliner, and they married in Scotland in 1905, where William was an Electrical Engineer.
John immigrated to Sydney, NSW where he was a Storeman at Bondi in Sydney when he married Ethel Helena Applegarth (born 1903 in New Zealand) in 1927. John was a Physical Culture Instructor with the Army and served with the ACMF 30 Battalion A Coy as a Private (Service No:265889) in 1936/1937. He and Ethel Divorced in 1938 and in March 1943, John enlisted with the RAAF. He was attached to 86 Squadron as a Flying Officer (Service No:021099113/127373) when he was Discharged in December 1945. In 1948, John married Dorothy Ireland (born 1917 in Croydon, NSW) at Armidale in NSW. Dorothy had served in the WRAAF as an Aircraftwoman (Service No:105546) with 2 Radio Installation and Maintenance Unit from 1942 to 1945.
John and Dorothy settled in Sydney, NSW where John was a Salesman. He died in 1990.
