Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Irvin was the youngest of two children of Ernest James Manning (born 1895 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Elsie May Dickinson (born 1891 Geelong, Victoria). Ernest was in the Boot Trade in 1917 when he married Elsie, and they settled at Collingwood and raised their family.

Irvin was a Clerk when enlisted in the RAAF in December 1942. He was a Flight Sergeant (Service No:125255) attached to 2 Operational Training Unit (Mildura) when he was Discharged in February 1945. Almost every fighter pilot who served in the South West Pacific theatre either trained at 2 OTU or did a refresher course there - more than 1, 200 between 1942 and 1946 (https://ozatwar.com/raaf/2otu.htm)

In 1948 Irvin was a Clerk in Collingwood when he married Joyce Cardwell (born 1918 in Collingwood, Victoria). Joyce was also a Clerk, and continued working after her marriage. Irvin and Joyce settled at Heidelberg in Melbourne, where Irvin worked as a Clerk, and in 1954 Joyce was working as a Pastry Cook. By 1974 Irvin was a Manager - he died in 2012.
