Marjorie was the fifth of eight children of William Elkington Butler (born 1864 in Cogh, Victoria) and Ellen Annie White (born 1887 in Melton, Melbourne, Victoria). William was a Farmer at Korumbuura in Gippsland, Victoria when he married Ellen in Melbourne, Victoria in 1903. They settled at Korumburra and raised their family there.
Marjorie was a Nurse at the Queen's Memorial Infectious Diseases (QMID) Hospital and was working at Summerleigh Lodge at Healesville when she enlisted in the WRAN in February 1942. Marjorie was a Petty Officer SBA (Service No:WR/724) on the HMAS Lonsdale and HMAS Cerberus and was Discharged in June 1946. Brothers John Elkington (Service No:VX7496); Raymond (Service No:VX11929); Norman Spencer (Service No:V389080) and Francis Harold (Service No:V389439) also served in WWII.
Marjorie moved to Cairns, QLD where she was working as a Doctor's Receptionist in 1950 when she married James Frederick McCafferty Jnr (born 1915 in Cairns, QLD). James, a Clerk, served in WWII as a Private (Service Nos:QX53349/Q116540) and his sister Kathleen Eugenie served with the Army Women's Medical Service (Service Nos:QFX52053/Q271013).
Marjorie and James settled in Cairns, where James worked as a Tally Clerk. Marjorie died in 1982 and James in 1986.
